Febuary 23rd This Day In History

This date holds a dual special meaning in history (for this writer).

First,  in 1836 on this date the siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas.

And next, in 1945 on this date (landing day plus 5) the U.S. Marines raised “Old Glory” on Mount Suribachi  during the battle of Iwo Jima. This battle and the final push on Okinawa were the last major US offensives (on what was considered Japaneses soil) before the end of the Pacific war in WWII.

To all Texans and Marines this is red letter date in history.

This date gives me pause as the the fragility of life and the importance to live each day and to plan and protect you and your family. And it is with pride for this writer to know that people took a stand on the issues of the day.

I can only  hope we all,  have some of this courage,  if needed in our own lives, and  I continue to pray every day for Peace for us all.

On a more up beat note, on this day in history, back on  Feb. 23, 1954, the first mass inoculation of children against polio with the Salk vaccine began in Pittsburgh. This gives  me pause to recall and reflect on Ms. Wier Smith who passed away, some years ago,  in Beaumont TX.   She was a dear lady who helped many people she came in contact with,  and I thought of her as a dear family friend. She was also  a polio survivor who lived life to the fullest.
