Most people look at health insurance first by the deductible on the plan. For example, my plan has a $1,000 deductible. But what does this really mean and is there more to this?

In short this is a good starting place for a PPO or even a new HSA type plan, but there is a lot more to it.

This video gives a good explanation of these important parts of Health Insurance. Note that the new law and changes to health insurance has eliminated the lifetime maximum. In the past this amount was between $2,000 and $5,000 for most plans.

And finally, here’s a link to an Excel spreadsheet that I have worked up that can be customized to your plans limits and will better illustrate this concept.
